Where you stay in Lanzarote can make a difference to how you organise your days and the kind of atmosphere you return to in the evening.

Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto Calero each suit a different type of trip. This guide compares them by location, transport, beaches, evening atmosphere and pace, so you can choose the base that works best for you.

Puerto del Carmen: active and well connected

Puerto del Carmen is one of the best-located areas in Lanzarote. It sits right on the coast and works very well as a base if you want to move around the island easily. It is especially suitable for active travellers.

The area has cycle lanes, space for scooters and a long seaside promenade that is ideal for walking. Its location makes it easy to get around both by car and by public transport, with frequent connections to Arrecife and other parts of the island.

There is also a broad range of international restaurants, making the area lively throughout the day.

Different atmospheres coexist within Puerto del Carmen. Accommodation on the seafront and close to the nightlife areas is well suited to younger travellers looking to stay close to evening entertainment. In contrast, areas such as Matagorda and Los Pocillos are quieter, with calmer beaches, making them ideal for couples and families.

Thanks to its strategic location, Puerto del Carmen allows easy access to many of Lanzarote’s main points of interest, with relatively short driving distances. This makes it a practical and flexible option for different types of travellers

Playa Blanca: beaches and a relaxed pace

Playa Blanca is located at the southern end of Lanzarote and is one of the best areas if you prioritise beach time and a relaxed pace during your stay.

The area offers several urban beaches with fine sand, well integrated into the town. Some of them, such as Playa Flamingo or the main town beach, are sheltered from currents, making them especially suitable for travelling with children.

From Playa Blanca, it is also easy to reach some of Lanzarote’s most well-known beaches, including the Papagayo beaches. They can be accessed either by car or on foot, allowing visitors to combine urban beaches with more natural surroundings.

While Playa Blanca does not have an intense nightlife, it offers a pleasant evening atmosphere. There are bars and pubs by the sea, particularly around Marina Rubicón, where nights tend to be calm and welcoming.

Because Playa Blanca is at the southern end of the island, travelling by car is more practical if you want to explore the rest of Lanzarote freely and comfortably.

Overall, Playa Blanca is a good choice if you are looking for calm waters, a relaxed environment and easy seaside walks.

Costa Teguise: convenient without relying on a car

Costa Teguise is located on the east coast of Lanzarote, not far from Arrecife and it is well connected by public transport. This makes it a convenient area if you prefer not to rely on a car.

The area also has a coastal route that continues towards Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. This makes it possible to combine longer walks or bike rides with time by the sea.

Costa Teguise offers several fine sandy beaches of different sizes. The local conditions make some of the beaches especially appealing if you like sailing and windfoiling. At the heart of Costa Teguise is Pueblo Marinero, an area with a wide range of restaurants and dining options, catering for different tastes and budgets.

In the evening, Costa Teguise sits somewhere between Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen. It has more evening activity than Playa Blanca, but without the intensity of Puerto del Carmen.

Puerto Calero: calm and quiet by the marina

Puerto Calero is a marina developed in the 1980s, with a focus on comfort, calm and well-kept surroundings.

It has kept a very clear character: quiet, elegant and relaxed. Here, the sense of exclusivity comes more from the atmosphere and the marina setting than from a busy social scene.

It is a good choice if you are looking for peace away from the busier tourist areas. Most restaurants are around the marina, and evenings tend to revolve around dinner by the sea and quiet walks rather than lively nightlife.

Overall, Puerto Calero suits travellers who value tranquillity, a more refined atmosphere and a strong connection with the sea.

Choose the area that fits your trip

The best place to stay in Lanzarote depends less on finding one perfect location and more on how you plan to spend your days. Think about how often you want to move around the island, how important the beach is to you and the kind of atmosphere you prefer when you return to your accommodation.
